Job Description

Salmon Valley Stewardship (SVS) is seeking a highly motivated individual to leverage local resources, enhance efficiencies of partners, and amplify forest restoration collaboration working to achieve forest/watershed health, provide jobs, restore native plant communities, and invest in resilient landscapes in the Salmon River Region of Central Idaho.

 

Classification: Full Time, Exempt; (35-40 hours/week) - 2 year funded position with potential to grow the position

Salary: $19 - 21 hourly, Dependent on experience

Location: Salmon, Idaho

Reports to: Associate Director

Start dates: mid-November/December 2022

 

Coordinator Responsibilities

The Reforestation Partnership Coordinator will serve in a coordinator/liaison role to establish respectful working relationships and coordinate with various community partners, individuals, and Salmon-Challis National Forest (SCNF) staff. The coordinator will additionally build a local workforce with inventory and monitoring skills, determine reforestation stewardship priorities, and grow the reforestation program.

 

Program Development

  • Plan and coordinate reforestation activities to assist the SCNF with a phased programmatic approach to achieve reforestation plan objectives.
  • Provide broader work experience and job skill building opportunities that sustains a stewardship workforce.
  • Conduct research to identify gaps, existing skills, and skills needed to further effectively grow a coordinated and effective local reforestation workforce.
  • Continue to leverage federal and non-federal sources of funding for program sustainability by assisting with grant-seeking and writing, fundraising events, and when funds are acquired, by assisting with reporting requirements.
  • Provide consistent and timely program outreach and public relations support to SVS, including press releases, social media communication, newsletter contributions, and outreach materials.
  • Evaluate and build out the partnership program.

 

Field Work

  • Coordinate timber surveys and monitoring that provides essential information needed for the SCNF to achieve implementation of reforestation and forest health objectives. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Stand exam surveys for possible timber harvest.
    • Vegetation and regeneration surveys that provide data for the USFS to develop planting and thinning plans in past forest fire complex areas.
    • Surveys to assess whitebark pine status.
    • Post broadcast burning monitoring surveys to ensure burning activities have followed the silviculture prescription.
    • Cone collection surveys to identify, flag, GPS, map and record information for annual cone collection of desired tree species for Silviculture program seed inventory needs.
    • Coordinate tree seedling planting, vegetation restoration, and invasive weed mitigation with the SCNF and partners.
  • Provide field trainings for skill building within a local workforce that include survey and monitoring techniques, technology technical skills, communication and field safety.
  • Manage field crews (4-6 people) and coordinate with youth crews organizations (10+ crew size) for field trainings and implementing inventory and monitoring.

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or Education in forestry, ecology/environmental science, particularly with an understanding of Rocky Mountain forests, and/or similar program management.
  • Experience managing projects, including reports, budgets, and monitoring outcomes.
  • Ability and desire to work with forest restoration partners including government officials, NGO partners, citizens, and landowners.
  • Confidence and experience with community outreach, communicating with the public both in writing and verbally, and social media.
  • Possess skills suitable for grant-writing, including attention to detail, grammatical accuracy, creative/and or technical writing skills.
  • Understanding of risk management and willingness to train in outdoor first responder/first aid/CPR.
  • Ability to collect and report monitoring data through detailed notes and use of tablets/GPS, storing and organizing data using common and technical software.
  • Knowledge of GIS and creating maps, use of AGOL, Fieldmaps, Survey 123, Collector, Avenza, Garmin, ArcMap.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Web Browsers, Google drive and/or Office 365
  • Experience/Education in systematic botany or related plant identification courses.
  • Knowledge of common forestry practices and timber types to perform stand exams competently.
  • A safe driving record and high comfort level operating a 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rough roads. Experience driving utvs and pulling trailers.
  • A high level of physical fitness (ability to hike up to 10 miles with a light pack).
  • Self-motivation and initiative. Organization and efficiency.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, 10 hour field days, some nights/weekends may be required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and manage crews of 10+.
  • Ability to train, organize, delegate, and motivate volunteers, youth crews, and partners.
